Brass bells had been used since ancient times in sacred rites, at lunar eclipses and following a death, because brass’s sonorous, shrill and penetrating sound was thought to be best for the expiation of pollutions – and for preventing spells from reaching the moon, where demons lay in wait for such summonses.
